Tidewater Wit and Wisdom

An honest man can never be outdone in courtesy.
A sensual life is a miserable life.
The contempt of death makes all the miseries of life easy to us.
-Taken from Seneca’s Dialogues, a primer for young men in Tidewater Virginia and Maryland

Fear God.
Reverence the parents.
Imitate not the wicked.
Boast not in discourse of thy wit or doings.
Affront no one by word or deed.
Be not selfish, but free and generous to others
The School of Manners

As to the species of exercise I advise the gun.
-Thomas Jefferson

I am an aristocrat: I love liberty; I hate equality.
-John Randolph of Roanoke

We cannot but resent that forty thousand people should be impoverished to enrich more than forty merchants [Wall Street Bankers].
-Governor William Berkeley of Virginia

She lives in eternal shame that lives to see the death of her good name.
-Charles County Court, Maryland, Proceedings, 1662

We cannot master time nor tide, so we must master ourselves.
Good manners keep us from killing each other.
-Old proverbs from Anne Arundel County, Maryland

Salt yo’ food, suh, with humor . . . season it with wit, and sprinkle it all over with the charm of good-fellowship, but never poison it with the cares of yo’ life.  It is an insult to yo’ digestion, beside bein,’ suh, a mark of bad breeding’.
-F. Hopkinson Smith, Colonel Carter of Cartersville

A gentleman from Maryland and a gentleman from Virginia were discussing the merits of their respective liquors. The Marylander poured the Virginian two drinks.  Upon partaking of the one, the Virginian fainted.  When the Virginian came to, he admitted defeat.  “But suh,” exclaimed the Maryland gentleman, “you drank the chaser!”
-An old Maryland joke

Before this war is over I intend to be a Major General or a corpse!
-Major General Isaac Trimble, Army of Northern Virginia

Puritanism: The haunting fear that someone, somewhere, may be happy.
-H. L. Mencken

Without morals a republic cannot subsist any length of time; they therefore who are decrying the Christian religion, whose morality is so sublime and pure (and) which insures to the good eternal happiness, are undermining the solid foundation of morals, the best security for the duration of free governments.
-Charles Carroll of Carrolton

I like whiskey. I always did, and that is why I never drink it.
-Robert E. Lee

California spent on high-speed rail and illegal immigrants, but ignored Oroville Dam

The flood danger from the Oroville Dam receded Monday, but California was hit by a wave of criticism for failing to heed warnings about risks to the spillway at a time when the state spent generously on illegal immigrants and high-speed rail.

California Gov. Jerry Brown, a Democrat, came under fire amid reports that federal and state officials for years rebuffed or ignored calls to fortify the massive 50-year-old dam, which provides water to more than 20 million farmers and residential consumers.

“What’s Governor Brown doing?” former state Assemblyman Tim Donnelly, a Republican, asked in a Monday post on Facebook. “The same thing he’s been doing for decades — obstructing progress.”

A radio talk show host, Mr. Donnelly said California “has been so busy defying President Donald Trump in order to protect illegal aliens from deportation that it forgot to do the things government is supposed to do, like maintain infrastructure. Governor Brown is now going hat-in-hand to beg the Trump administration for emergency funds.”

GOP rep urges Trump to prevent illegal immigrants from claiming tax credits

Rep. Luke Messer (R-Ind.) is urging President Trump to take actions to prevent immigrants in the country illegally from claiming the child tax credit.

“Most Americans are astonished to learn that each year billions of taxpayer dollars are given out to people who are in our country illegally,” Messer said in a news release. “This is just one example of how our broken tax and immigration systems continue to incentivize immigrants to come here illegally. It’s long past time to change it.”

Via Billy

From  the L.A. Times
A Mexican military helicopter gunship fired on the alleged hideout of a drug kingpin in one of a pair of raids that left 12 suspects dead, including the cartel capo, Mexican authorities said Friday.
In a statement, the Mexican Navy said federal forces mounting an operation against drug traffickers in Tepic were met by  high-powered weapons. Commanders summoned the  aircraft to reduce the danger of injuries to civilians and officers, the statement said. Use of the helicopter was in accordance with military guidelines, the Navy said.
A second shootout between authorities and alleged drug gang accomplices near the city airport killed four other suspects from the same criminal syndicate, the military said.

ICE Arrests 600+ Illegal Immigrants Across 11 States, Many Are Dangerous Criminals

Via Billy

The New York Times is reporting that U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement aka ICE has made over 600 arrests last week of illegal immigrants across the Untied States.

From The New York Times:

Federal immigration officials arrested more than 600 people across at least 11 states last week, detaining 40 people in the New York City area, law enforcement officials said on Sunday…

…But Gillian Christensen, acting press secretary for the Department of Homeland Security, said, “The focus of these targeted enforcement operations is consistent with the routine, targeted arrests carried out by ICE’s Fugitive Operations Teams on a daily basis.”…

“All these people are in violation of some sort of immigration law,” the official said, adding that some of their convictions included rape and aggravated assault. “We’re not going out to Walmart to check papers — we know who we are going out to seek.”

Kansas secretary of state backs the White House: New Hampshire Senate race that swung on 1,017-vote margin may have been decided by 6,000 out-of-state voters

Via Billy

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach said Monday that on Election Day, 6,000 people with out-of-state drivers licenses registered to vote in New Hampshire – creating a real possibility of fraud in a U.S. Senate race that was decided by a 1,017-vote margin

Kansas Secretary of State Kris Kobach said Monday that 6,000 people registered to vote on Election Day in New Hampshire using out-of-state ID

White House senior aide Stephen Miller claimed Sunday that 'thousands' of people actually voted illegally in New Hampshire last year

The U.S. Senate race in the Granite State was decided by just 1,017 votes, with a Democratic challenger unseating a Republican incumbent

I just received an unsolicited broadcast email from MeetUp - see below.

It announced a world-wide formation of the #Resist campaign.
http://www.meetup.com/pro/resist/?campaign=email2017

There are numerous #Resist meetups scheduling activities in our area.
... Apex, Raleigh, Durham, Morrisville, Chapel Hill, etc.

This appears to be a coordinated effort to defeat the Trump presidency and its' nationalist / conservative agenda.  The following is an excerpt from the first thread on the discussion board of #Resist-Raleigh:

 FOCUS ON IMPEACHABLE OFFENSES.

While we are consumed with outrage, the Trump administration and Congress have gutted or are currently abolishing environmental protections, financial protections, public education, and civil rights. They attempted to eliminate the independent Office of Congressional Ethics in a midnight session. Now they are trying to eliminate the Election Assistance Commission, an agency formed specifically to ensure the integrity of elections. The GOP is committed to eliminating all checks and balances in our system in this brazen power grab.

 RESIST AGGRESSIVELY.
There is a clear signal here. Of course you are right to be disgusted with every ridiculous action he or his administration takes. But this will be a long fight, and it will be exhausting. Don't be derailed by the things we cannot change. There are plenty of things we can, and we must. But that requires paying attention to the signal hidden in the noise.

Meetup has always served as an organizing platform for a wide range of political views, welcoming everyone from the Howard Deaniacs to the Tea Party. Meetup will always welcome people with different beliefs.

But after the recent executive order aimed to block people on the
basis of nationality and religion, a line was crossed. At a time when core democratic ideals feel under attack, we feel a duty to spark more civic participation.

Last week, we created 1,000+ #Resist Meetup Groups to act as local hubs for actions on behalf of democracy, equality, human rights, social justice, and sustainability. Already 50,000+ people have joined.

These #Resist Meetups are open to anyone who want to create a bright future that's rich with opportunity and freedom for all.

Meetup exists to connect people so they create opportunity and make the world they want. We hope members take these Meetups forward to be powerful together.

More mainstream media mess-ups: The Muslim Olympian 'detained because of President Trump's travel ban' was detained under Obama

Via Billy
Ibtihaj Muhammad claimed in an interview Tuesday that she was detained "just a few weeks ago" by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents. She said she was held for a few hours without explanation. (John Salangsang/Invision/AP)
- Barack Obama was still president in December 2016, meaning Muhammad was detained under America's 44th commander in chief.

- Trump was sworn into office on Jan. 20.

- The executive order on immigration was signed into law on Jan. 27.
To put it plainly, reports suggesting, and alleging, that the executive order had ensnared an American champion are totally false.
Reporters have done it again.

The latest media misfire on the Trump administration involves Ibtihaj Muhammad, a New Jersey native who made headlines last year when she became the first female Muslim-American to win an Olympic medal for the United States.

Muhammad, a lifelong American citizen, claimed in an interview last week that she was detained "just a few weeks ago" by U.S. Customs and Border Protection agents. She said she was held for two hours without explanation.

Geraldo Rivera resigns from Yale position over ‘lame’ name change & Yale to Host ‘Black Panther Party’ to Celebrate Black History Month

Via Billy

Resigned yeterday as Associate Fellow of at . Been an honor but intolerant insistence on political correctness is lame.

His ideas are repugnant but name change would shock who named John C Calhoun 1 of 5 "greatest"all-time senators in 1957

To judge a 200 yr old early 19th century historic figure by standards of the 21st century as is doing is more Orwellian than inspired

Slavery was abhorrent sin. Will students now petition to change name of capital? was a slave holder as was

Geraldo Rivera announced Sunday that he resigned from his fellowship position at Yale University after the Ivy League school decided to rename a college named after 19th-century Vice President John C. Calhoun because of his support for slavery.

Mr. Rivera announced on Twitter that he officially resigned as an associate fellow of Calhoun College, which has been renamed to honor trailblazing computer scientist Grace Murray Hopper.

Yale University students will celebrate Black History Month by cheering the founding of the violent Black Panther Party — with their own “Black Panther Party.”

The shindig, to be held on campus the school’s African-American House (known as Af-Am House), and sponsored by the African American Cultural Center is designed to celebrate the Black Panther organization’s 50th anniversary,  and to help students at the school come face-to-face with the history of black activism.

Details of the party have not been released and Yale did not respond for requests for comment.
